Trend Spotting – Word Art for Walls

Creating art from words is really trendy.  And what a fun trend!  Whether you are browsing Pinterest, Etsy or home decor blogs you see signs, wall art and framed word images.  I love this trend!  Not only do our photos have meaning, but when you add words or quotes to your photo collages it can help the photos take on even more meaning.  It can help tie the collage together.  I have always loved letters.  As a child, I loved playing with blocks that had letters, letter magnets, puzzles and books. I have always loved having notebooks and paper and pens so that I can doodle letters.  So, this word art trend is extremely fascinating for me!  I decided to take advantage of this trend to make some signs for my house!

Does your family have a phrase or mantra?  I have recently declared a new one for our family for 2013.  My girls really are adorable and they are very good kids.  But they are kind of lazy.  When they don’t want to do something, like clean their toy room or practice the piano, they always say that they can’t do something because it’s “too hard.”  My husband and I are constantly reminding the girls that they CAN DO hard things.  I find myself saying it so often, I decided to make a sign for my kitchen.

I hope that seeing that image on the wall multiple times every day will help that phrase stick in my children’s minds.  They CAN DO hard things!  When they are crying about not being able to zip their own coats, I just point to the sign and say, “What does it say?”.  They respond, often in unison in a bored tone, “I can do hard things.”  To which I reply, “Yep, that’s right!  You CAN do hard things.  So take a deep breath, try again and if you need help, ask for it.  No tantrums.”  (No tantrums was another option for our kitchen wall sign!)

At the beginning of the year, there was a lot of talk about what people’s One Little Word would be for the year.  I tossed several around, and kept changing my mind.  I had a really hard time settling on a word, so I decided on a phrase first, “Good, Better, Best.”  I feel like for the most part, I make pretty good choices.  But I need to focus on being “better.”  So, my word for this year is “better”.  I wanted to make a word image to serve as a reminder for this year, but I didn’t want to just hang the word “better” over my desk.  So, I created a sign that says “Make a BETTER choice.”

I really LOVE how these turned out!  I was able to combine my love for fonts, chalkboards (sans chalk dust!) and Photoshop into one (or two) project(s).  Who doesn’t love layering fun stuff on top of fun stuff?  I bought my frames at Hobby Lobby.  A very special THANK YOU to the printers at Persnickety Prints for always doing a fabulous job!

So, here is my challenge to YOU!  I want you to think of one word or phrase or quote that embodies a trait or characteristic you have or want to have.  Create an original* piece of digital artwork with your word, phrase, or quote that is 8×10 inches (original size).  Upload your photo to an online gallery or photo sharing website.  Come back here and enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below!  Deadline to submit artwork is Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 11:59pm EST.

*original means that you didn’t download someone else’s artwork or word-art or subway art and try to pass it off as your own.  You may use digital scrapbook products or graphics to assist you in the creation of your word art.

Creating your word art with one of my products will earn you an extra entry.

Here’s the good stuff… the PRIZES!

One lucky random winner will receive the following:

1. A printed copy of their word art shipped to them for FREE by Persnickety Prints!

Digital Scrapbook Challenge: Recipe Challenge

Howdy everybody! It’s Angie, with a digital scrapbook challenge for August. Over the past couple of months we have hosted a color challenge and a scraplift challenge, however this month we are going to do a recipe challenge. It’s pretty simple to complete; just follow the upcoming instructions to create a layout using Meredith’s products, then post a link to the finished layout in the comments section of this post.

For participating, everyone will receive a coupon for 50% off a future purchase, whilst one lucky random winner will receive a $10 coupon to Meredith’s store!

Before we begin, keep in mind that you can use as many digital scrapbook products as you want, as long as they are available to purchase in Meredith’s store (outside fonts are perfectly fine though!) and you have to follow these six steps. Ready? Lets begin!

1. Select a minimum of two background papers, with at least one of these papers being a patterned paper. Layer them however you want.

2. Pick your photos and place them – I’ve really been enjoying multiple photo layouts lately, so lets go with three to six photos.

3. Frame at least two of your photos – if the kit you are using doesn’t come with any frames, create one yourself with some papers or by outlining your photo (such as the ‘stroke’ option in Photoshop CS).

4. Take any sort of element and use it four times on your layout. Eg four flowers, four stars, four leaves. You can use recolored and different sized versions of the same element, too. All four elements do not have to be clustered or even in the same area. Then do this a second time, using a different sort of element from before.

5. Use at least two fonts/alphas in your title work. You can use two alphas, two fonts or an alpha and a font.

6. Place the rest of the elements however you want, shadow, journal, date etc.

If you get stuck on any step, please feel free to let me know in the comments below and I will clarify as quickly as possible! If you’re needing a bit of inspiration, here is my own layout, created using the above steps:

To create this layout I used one of Meredith’s recent new releases, Under The Big Top:

So, to be in for a chance to win, make sure you’ve done the following:

1. Created a layout using the above six instructions, using one (or more) of Meredith’s products.
2. Upload it to Meredith’s gallery at Scrap Orchard.
3. Come back here and leave a comment with a link to your layout.
4. This challenge closes on the 20th of August at 11.59pm EST. Your comment, with a link to your completed layout, must be posted by this date and time.

Good luck – I can’t wait to see your layouts!

Interview with a Twist: Jen, Jensen, Jennifer!

Can you believe it’s half-way through July? The summer is flying by, but it’s time to meet another one of Meredith’s digital scrapbook creative team members with a quick Interview with a Twist. Jaime here to introduce you to Jennifer, aka jmljensen. I love spending time being inspired by Jennifer’s gallery, but I’m in awe of the amazing layouts she’s been sending out with stuff from Meredith’s store. I spotted this one in the gallery, (using Meredith’s Things My Mom Taught Me) and I knew I just had to know more about her love for digital scrapbooking.

Life’s Lessons using Things my Mom Taught Me

When did you start digital scrapbooking and why?

I have been scrapbooking for about 12 years and I accidentally fell into digital scrapbooking about 3 1/2 years ago. I actually used to think digital scrapbooking was cheating, but I was so wrong. I purchased PSE7 only to play with photos but it came with a learn-to-digital-scrapbook CD. And since I didn’t know anything about PSE, I started to watch it and I got hooked. The possibilities are endless with digital scrapbooking.

In your opinion, what element is a kit incomplete without (staple, flower, etc.)?

Stitching. I love stitching and all the different things you can do with it. I especially love the thick thread stitching the best in all different shapes and sizes.

What tip, trick or advice would you give to a scrapper just starting out?

Practice makes perfect. Keep at it and you’ll be hooked just like the rest of us. I first learned the basics in PSE, then I subscribed to a monthly tutorial site and each month learned a new tip/trick. That’s the best way to improve is to keep trying new techniques.

What is your favorite layout and why?

My favorite layout was when I scrapbooked Split Rock Lighthouse. I love how the blending of the large photo turned out and my cluster frame was fun to make and I think it looks pretty cool.

What’s your favorite Meredith kit and why?

Oh that’s a tough one. I love all her stuff but I would have to say my favorite kit right now is Fabulous Fourth. I love the red, white & blue theme and the unique elements that are in there. It’s such a fun and festive kit plus it’s so easy to use for any theme, not just 4th of July stuff.

Now since I am a huge fan of Jennifer’s gallery, I want you to be, too. Head there and pick out your favorite layout and join us for a scraplift challenge. You can lift any layout in her gallery, but use a product by Meredith Cardall Designs and be entered to win a $6.00 gift certificate to her store! Just link up here by July 31st to be eligible. I can’t wait to see what you all have in store for us!

Have Fun, Scrap & Win with Mere!

Happy Holidays Meredith fans!  I’m super excited to announce a new feature added to Mere’s blog — the Tuesday Challenge!  Here’s an opportunity for you to have fun, scrap,  play with some of Meredith’s amazing digital scrapbook designs, and possibly win a kit of your choice!  In addition, everyone who participates will receive Meredith’s Cool December mini-kit.

Using the advent calendar as an inspiration, we’ll make our first ever challenge together- a Recipe Challenge with only two ingredients.  First, since the advent calendar counts down the days to Christmas, your page must include two traditional Christmas colors –  red and green.  It doesn’t have to be a lot.  It can be as small as a red berry or green leaf or it could be the main colors of your page.  It’s completely up to you.  The second ingredient, taking our cue from the 24 days on the advent calendar, you must have at least 24 elements on your page.  For the challenge I’ll consider a single letter from an alpha as one element.  Easy peasy, right?

I used Meredith’s incredible kit “A Brand New Day“.

And created this page using a scanned photo from my engagement 12 years ago.  Yes, I’m just a tad bit behind on my scrapping.  LOL.

OK, let’s go over all the essentials:

  1. Include any amount of green and red on your page.
  2. Use at least 24 elements or more (a single letter from an alpha is considered one element).
  3. Use at least one thing in your page that was designed by Meredith.  If you don’t already have one of her kits  in your stash, she has plenty of freebies on this blog.
  4. Have fun.
  5. Post your layout in a gallery of your choice and link us up in the comments below by next Monday, December 20th, 11:49 PM PT.

I’ll be back next Tuesday to hand out participation goodies, choose the random winner of Meredith’s kit and a new challenge!

Got it?  Good!  Go Scrap!

Monday at Mere’s: Card Challenge

Hi there,  my name is Sara and I am one of Meredith Cardall’s Creative Team members.  I am here today to push you to get your digital scrapbook holiday cards created and printed to share with family and friends.

I have found that sometimes ordering the generic cards that some stores offer is not as fun as customizing my own.  Cards are not just for the holidays but can also be created and sent to family and friends throughout the year with updates and photos.  Being a Military Family, our relatives often miss out on the little things that happen with us and our children.  This gives us a way to celebrate each of their little achievements as well as giving family a keepsake they can keep with them and share with others.

I create my cards in a 4×6 format so they are easy to print and easy to send.  I purchase my envelopes (Invitation size) from our local store and these cards fit perfect inside and also look professional for sending.

So now for the Challenge!  Take the template and use it to create your card.  It does not have to be for the holidays, just use it as you please.  You can even change it and make it a 6 x4 card by rotating the template 90 degrees.  Please use at least 50% of Meredith Cardall Design products (Freebies also work!).  Upload this to your favorite gallery, come back here to the blog and post your link in the comments! On November 14th, one random winner will be chosen to receive a free kit of their choice!!!

Here is a preview of the Template:

I hope that you find inspiration in this Challenge.  Thank you for taking on this challenge and I look forward to seeing your card creations!
